Grammar Rule for Acronyms

You’ve seen it before: someone uses a pluralized acronym to represent a plural concept.  Here is an example:

Points of view = POVs

But why the ‘s’ at the end of the acronym?  Point of view and points of view are both represented by the same acronym — POV.  The pluralization of it is not necessary, even when the structure of the sentence is altered.

My POV is linear.  Their POV are diverse.

WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION = WMD (not WMDs)

The group of weapons has traditionally been represented by an acronym that is not pluralized.  This is the grammar convention.
